Storm Ernesto forces the closure of seaports in Puerto Rico

The Coast Guard announced Tuesday the activation of Yankee status for Puerto Rico’s seaports and the Virgin Islands from the United States due to the passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto through the area, resulting in the closure of these ports to incoming commercial traffic.

The U.S. agency said that while Yankee port status is in effect, ports will remain closed to incoming commercial vessel traffic unless the port captain grants authorization for access.

Ocean-going vessels weighing more than 500 tons and without an approved request to remain will be required to leave ports.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced the arrival of a tropical storm for Puerto Rico and a hurricane watch for the islands of Culebra and Vieques and the Virgin Islands.

The Coast Guard urged the maritime community to take necessary precautions and remain alert to any new weather forecasts related to this system.

Authorities advise recreational boat owners to seek safe harbor and be alert for any changes in weather forecasts and small craft alerts in the coming hours.

The Coast Guard will continue to monitor Ernesto’s trajectory and will announce any port changes based on future forecasts.

In response to Spain, the EU will address the situation in Venezuela
