The Government of Mexico revealed this Wednesday that during the six-year term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) financed the opposition organization Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI) with 96,7 million pesos (5,1 million dollars).

Pablo Gómez Álvarez, head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UFI), was in charge of releasing a report requested by the president to demonstrate the “interference” and “violation of sovereignty” of the United States in politics. Mexican, which has been denounced in recent weeks.

“This organization, very politically active, is a civil association proclaimed non-profit,” he said, highlighting that the funds it receives are tax deductible although in reality it is not dedicated to the objectives for which it was supposedly established.

“At least they should have the obligation to inform the people of Mexico what they do with these amounts that are not small and, in another sense, Mexicans are obliged to ask Congress for permission to provide services to foreign governments. “Is receiving donations or not equivalent to providing certain kinds of services or being under the supervision of foreign governments,” he questioned.

The official explained that US funding to MCCI, an organization created by opposition businessman Claudio throughout the entire six-year term.

Since then and until now, he added, USAID sent the million-dollar resources, which were added to other funds provided to MCCI by private entities such as the Ford, John and Catherine Macarthur, Comunidad and Rockefeller foundations, among others.

The detailed list of the accounts of MCCI, an organization that has carried out multiple journalistic investigations to denounce causes of corruption in the current Government, includes contributions from private companies in Mexico.

López Obrador had already anticipated that they would release this report and that he would send a letter to the US president, Joe Biden, to demand clarity about the financing of opponents in the Latin American country.
