Marinos de Oriente completed the comeback in the series against Pioneros del Ávila and finally advanced to the Super Round of the 2024 Professional Basketball Super League (SPB) postseason.
The naval team defeated the capital team on Monday with a score of 75-70 at the Rutaca Sport Arena in Maturín, in the seventh game of the series, and made a heroic comeback. It is worth remembering that they were 3-1 down but added three wins in a row to get the ticket to the next phase.
Now the Eastern Battleship will compete in a round-robin against Gladiators of Anzoátegui (which means their return to the Luis Ramos gym on the Barcelona-Puerto La Cruz axis), Trotamundos of Carabobo, Guaiqueríes of Margarita and Cocodrilos of Caracas.
Even duel
The match between Marinos and Pioneros remained even for most of the time. The visitors’ biggest advantage was five points in the first few minutes, while the naval team managed to make a difference of up to 10 points in the third quarter, but the team from Ciego de Ávila did not give up and at the beginning of the last period they even managed to take the lead on the scoreboard.
In the final stretch, the team led by Argentine Silvio Santander once again brought out the weight of its history to go ahead on the scoreboard and achieve a comeback in a direct confrontation that had not been seen since 2002 in Venezuelan professional basketball.
In this match, the imports from the eastern team were of great importance. Shamorie Ponds contributed 18 points, four rebounds and three assists; while Romario Roque added 15 points, three rebounds and six assists.
The SPB board is expected to announce the Super Round schedule in the coming hours, the stage prior to the final of the 2024 tournament.
