In the video document brought to light by Alpha, we see the “zero point” and the moment of the start of the fire in Varnavas Attica. The fire claimed the life of a woman while also causing enormous material and environmental losses.
Varnavas, Penteli, Marathon, Nea Makri, Dionysos, Ano Vrilissia found themselves in the midst of the fiery onslaught. The recording of the damages has begun, while 14 support measures have already been announced for those affected by the fire.
Fire in Attica: Heavy blow – At least 100,000 acres, dozens of houses and businesses burned
The ongoing fiery nightmare in Attica left behind huge destruction in houses, businesses, fields, and even public buildings that turned to ashes.
The fire, from which a woman also lost her lifein a craft industry in Patima Chalandriou, has burned more than 100,000 acres, while the first calculations indicate that, in addition to the huge natural disaster and the charred animals, the houses that were given over to the flames reach 100, with dozens of burnt businesses of all kinds and cars.
From Varnavas, where it started, the fire, aided by strong winds, united its scattered foci in a single front in northeastern Attica, burning in Penteli, Grammatiko, Kapandriti, Marathon, Agios Stefanos, Drosia, Dionysos, Stamata, Nea Makri, while it extended to the urban fabric, in Vrilissia and Chalandri.
At the moment and as the battle with the fiery blaze continues, it is not possible to accurately describe the destruction, but some initial evidence exists. Even if approximate, the satellite data of the European Sentinel-2 satellite processed by the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr, as well as the high-resolution satellite observations (375 m) from the FIRMS (Fire Information for Resource Management System) system of NASA, show that the flames passed through an area of approximately 100,000 acres in Attica.
At the same time and as the mayor of Vrilissios, Yiannis Pisimisis, reported that 10 houses have been burned in the Krasa area, the president of Civil Protection of KEDE, Vlassis Siomos, made a first estimate of the total number of houses destroyed by the fire. “The houses that will be completely destroyed will exceed 100”, estimated Mr. Siomos, speaking at Open.
The images coming from Varnavas show that possibly in this area are most of the houses that burned, with many completely destroyed and others with burnt roofs, frames, etc., while in Dau Pentelis, the images are shocking of houses that have collapsed and turned into rubble after the fire passed.
But it’s not just the houses and hundreds of cars that went up in flames. In addition to the enormous destruction to the natural wealth of Attica and the hundreds of animals (around 150 animals have been transferred to the structures that were created on an emergency basis, with 4 being treated for burns and 2 dying), infrastructures such as the electricity network, but also public buildings, such as stadiums.
In the fiery conflagration, in the areas through which it passed, the flames also consumed businesses. A chemical factory, a lumber warehouse, a heating oil company, gas stations, warehouses, crafts, properties of all kinds, as well as fields, were destroyed by the fiery nightmare.
