Jerusalem, Aug 13 (EFE).- The five Israeli soldiers who remained in custody for sexually abusing a Palestinian prisoner in Sde Teiman prison in the south of the country will be placed under house arrest until Thursday of next week at the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the daily Haaretz confirmed.
The investigation into the case will continue over the next 10 days and the materials will be gradually transferred to the defence and the suspects will be given a pretrial detention report.
Once the investigation is concluded, “the defense, if it so wishes, may hold a hearing,” concludes the military statement on the request from the Prosecutor’s Office.
On July 29th, Ten soldiers were arrested for the alleged abuse of the Palestinian prisoner, who arrived at the hospital with several broken ribs and signs of abuse on other bones, as well as a tear in the large intestine and damage to a lung caused by the introduction of a foreign object rectally, according to what the doctor who treated him told Israeli public radio shortly after the incident.
Since then, the detention of the soldiers has been extended on a weekly basis, although only five remain in the process.
According to a recent report by the Israeli NGO B’Tselem, this is not an “isolated case.” The organization interviewed 55 prisoners and among their testimonies is that of Another Palestinian who said he had suffered sexual abuse by a soldier when he tried to insert a carrot into his anus.
Since the war broke out, thousands of Palestinians, mainly from the Gaza Strip, have been interned in Sde Teiman, located in the southern Negev desert.
Over there, Israeli authorities torture, beat and sexually assault Palestinians in areas without security cameras, many of whom are held without formal charges, according to reports from the NGO Physicians for Human Rights in Israel and Amnesty International.
On July 30, the Military Prosecution filed charges against another reservist for various crimes of ill-treatment against several Palestinian prisoners. The indictment alleges that this soldier, during the months of February to June, allegedly used “severe violence against the detainees entrusted to his custody.”
These arrests sparked violent protests in Sde Teiman prison, encouraged by some of the most far-right ministers in Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, such as the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, and the Minister of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich.
Both have publicly advocated, on more than one occasion, mistreating Palestinian detainees and even applying the death penalty.
Since the start of the war, 60 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli prisons, 48 of whom were from Gaza, according to B’Tselem.
