Care to take into account in the event of sudden changes in temperature

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The sudden drop in temperature favors the appearance of respiratory diseases, sneezing, coughing, and runny nose are among the most frequent symptoms. In this context, the Ministry of Health recommends that if fever or any discomfort appears, one should go to the nearest health service and not self-medicate, in order to avoid complications.

With sudden changes in the weather, such as a drop in temperature, there are people who are more susceptible to developing a respiratory tract infection or a complication of a chronic lung condition, especially those with a history of allergies and those in critical age groups such as children under 5 years of age and people over 60 years of age.

A mild respiratory condition could also lead to a serious condition, so it is important to always see a medical specialist in a timely manner.

The Ministry of Health advises that people should go to the nearest health service if they have any of the following symptoms: fever, sore throat, cough, muscle and joint pain, nasal congestion and discharge, general malaise, lack of appetite, headache, fatigue, breathing difficulties, in order to receive the corresponding treatment. It also recommends that they constantly monitor their allergies and not self-medicate, which means avoiding taking medicines without a doctor’s prescription.

It is important to remember that self-medication should not be tolerated under any circumstances, as this practice can complicate the patient’s condition instead of improving it.

In order to prevent the massive spread of respiratory diseases, the Ministry of Health reminds people to take into account as a preventive measure to avoid sharing: mate, tereré or cutlery with people who visibly present respiratory symptoms (runny nose, cough or cold).

Respiratory viruses are transmitted from person to person through small droplets generated when speaking, coughing or sneezing. They are also transmitted by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus, such as door handles, toys, telephones, railings, keyboards, etc., which is why practicing hygienic habits plays a fundamental role in prevention.

Decompensation in people with allergies

People with a history of allergies can easily become decompensated if they are not protected and do not maintain strict medical supervision.

Symptoms that may indicate the manifestation of an allergic condition include runny nose, sneezing and sudden coughing, as well as occasional asthma attacks and other conditions.

Allergy is a pathology that can cause health complications if not treated properly. It can cause severe respiratory symptoms and obstructive respiratory syndrome as a result of laryngitis, bronchiolitis or asthma. This disease mainly affects children and young people.

Laryngitis can lead to an allergic obstructive condition, as can bronchiolitis and asthma, the latter being classified as a chronic disease.

The Ministry of Public Health recommends constant monitoring of allergic symptoms and urges against self-treatment, which means avoiding the use of medications without a doctor’s prescription.

Preventive practices

  • Wash your hands. Frequent hand hygiene is the main preventive measure against this and other diseases. It is recommended to do so after touching your mouth, nose and eyes, and especially after coming into contact with secretions (saliva and mucus). Remember to wash your hands before eating and preparing food and after using the bathroom.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze. This practice is essential to prevent the flu virus from spreading and is achieved by covering your mouth and nose with the crook of your elbow or with a disposable tissue. It is not advisable to cover your mouth and nose with your hand, as this can spread the virus to people and objects.
  • Wear a face mask if you have respiratory symptoms to avoid transmitting the disease to others.
  • Keep children up to date with their regular vaccination schedule, especially those under 5 years of age.
