An “effective solution” to reduce food cravings

An “effective solution” to reduce food cravings

Scientists at the Korea Electro-Technology Research Institute said that using electrical stimulation of the brain over a period of two weeks can reduce appetite and hunger.

The treatment, called transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS), works through simple skull caps.

The study included 60 participants, half of whom received tRNS, while the other half were given a placebo.

They received 6 sessions of 20-minute electrical stimulation over 2 weeks, with 2 or 3 days between each session.

The results showed that the treatment was effective in reducing appetite, food cravings, and hunger, compared to the placebo group.

The researchers said the tendency to eat to treat or relieve feelings of stress, depression and anxiety was significantly reduced.

However, since the trial was only conducted for two weeks, it was not possible to confirm the long-term weight loss effect.

They explained that the electrical device stimulates the cerebral cortex through the scalp, which is partly responsible for reward and motivation when it comes to appetite and satiety.

The research team said the treatment may be more effective and safer than standard weight-loss drugs.

“If this ECT device, which has far fewer side effects than current obesity treatments, is commercialized for use at home instead of in hospitals, it will provide an easy and simple way to manage and suppress daily appetite,” said study author Qi Yong Shin. “If digital healthcare technology, which combines ECT and exercise therapy, is introduced, it will enhance the weight loss effects and help individuals manage their health more effectively.”
