The Clinical Psychology Department of the ASST of Vimercate conducted a pilot study, thanks also to the provision of an exclusive software for Tablets with digital pen, which uses artificial intelligence to identify and rehabilitate children with writing difficulties.
These are difficulties that can be characterized as a real developmental disorder called dysgraphia or DSA: it occurs when the child has unclear, disordered and difficult to understand handwriting and that concerns the reproduction of letters and numbers.
In recent years, therapists recall, DSA found in the age group between 6 and 10 years have reached significant numbers. Precisely for this reason, specialists underline the need to manage these problems in an innovative way and with a low emotional impact on children.
The system, made available to ASST psychologists by Oppimi, a company that operates in the medical field by creating advanced digital tools for the diagnosis and treatment of learning-related dysfunctions, provides “access to a platform that allows – explains Barbara Lo Iacono – the consultation of the results obtained by the children, with the possibility of implementing further treatment interventions”.
The study of the Clinical Psychology structure involved 12 children aged between 9 and 11 who participated in metacognitive group treatments associated with the use of the Tablet to practice and enhance their skills. The scientific literature – adds the psychologist – highlights the effectiveness of new technologies in the management and treatment of DSA.
“From a diagnostic point of view – confirms Barbara Lo Iacono, head of the Clinical Psychology structure – the instrument used has been sensitive in discriminating children with dysgraphia and has proven to be a valid support. Today, the encouraging results acquired after the integrated treatment are in a further phase of study, which testify to a marked improvement in the instrumental skills of the children”.
