The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) and the Uruguayan government are making arrangements for the visit of the Uruguayan national team to Venezuela. The Uruguayans will play the eighth round of the South American qualifiers on September 10.

The Vinotinto will host the Uruguayan national team at the Monumental stadium in Maturín, Monagas state, according to the schedule set by Conmebol. However, the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry has requested a meeting with the football authorities of its country to anticipate any inconvenience that the national team may face in light of the political and social tension facing Venezuela following the presidential elections on July 28.

After the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the presidential election without publishing the minutes of the vote count, several regional governments rejected the results and called for transparency, including that of Uruguay.

This demand led Nicolás Maduro to order the departure of Uruguayan diplomatic personnel accredited in the country, as well as those of other nations that have questioned the handling of the election results in Venezuela.

The precautions taken by the Uruguayan authorities

Uruguayan Foreign Minister Omar Paganini called a meeting with authorities from the National Sports Secretariat and the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) on Thursday, August 8, to discuss the political and diplomatic situation with Venezuela.

“The idea came from the foreign minister, basically to explain the relationship between the two countries and to find out what the Uruguayan delegation might need during its stay in Venezuela,” he told the Uruguayan media. Search the national secretary of Sport, Sebastián Bauzá.

According to the media, Paganini informed the authorities that despite the withdrawal of the Uruguayan ambassador Silvana Montes de Oca from Caracas, the government is still represented in Venezuela by administrative officials from Foreign Relations who can ensure logistics during the team’s stay in Venezuela.

The director of the AUF National Teams, Jorge Giordano, traveled to Maturín to reserve hotel rooms for the team, coordinate transportation and the training center that the Celeste will use.

Bauzá said that the Uruguayan team will travel on a charter flight from Carrasco Airport, but due to the demands of the Venezuelan government, the plane cannot be of Argentine or Chilean flag.
