The Vajont trial archive will remain in Belluno, while L’Aquila, the seat of the trial, will only keep a digital copy. The news is official and comes from Undersecretary Gianmarco Mazzi: “Today comes the decree that definitively places the 5,205 documents in Veneto”. The original papers will therefore remain in the region where the disaster occurred, where they had been taken after the earthquake in the Abruzzo capital. “The paper archive has a physical value – said Mazzi – bringing it home strengthens the identity and cohesion of that community”.
The file contains 257 envelopes of documentation produced by both the Court of Belluno and that of L’Aquila and by the Court of Appeal of L’Aquila where the trial took place between November 1968 and October 1970. The documents were kept in the State Archives of L’Aquila, where an inventory and digitization project had begun, suspended due to the earthquake of 6 April 2009, but which was recently completed.
