Bangladesh I head of the interim government Mohammad Yunus has announced that after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country, his first priority is to maintain law and order.

Recent student protests forced Sheikh Hasina, who had ruled with a strong 15-year rule, to flee to India in what Muhammad Younis described as a ‘revolution’.
The new leader said in a briefing in the capital Dhaka that ‘law and order in the country is the first priority of his interim government so that people can sit or go to work in peace.’
He also promised broader reforms such as strengthening freedom of expression after years of authoritarian rule that he described as an absolute evil.
He said: ‘Whatever the previous government did has no meaning to me. They didn’t know anything about running the system. But now there is hope. We are a new face for them, for the country. Finally, at this moment, the monster has been saved.’
About 500 people have been killed in recent violent protests that began as demands to roll back controversial job quotas and quickly turned into anti-government protests.
At the beginning of this month, when Sheikh Hasina escaped on a military helicopter, the peace and order of the country was destroyed. The situation worsened when police officers went on strike to protest the deaths of more than a dozen of their colleagues during the violence.
At the end of last week, the leaders of the student movement demanded the resignation of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Obaid Al Hasan, who immediately resigned along with five other judges of the Supreme Court.
The head of the interim government, Mohammad Yunus, outlined the plan to ensure the ‘independence of the judiciary’ as another of his priorities. He said that the previous system (justice) was not working which was merely under ‘some higher authority’.

Referring to Justice Ubaid Al Hasan, Muhammad Younis said that technically he was the Chief Justice. But actually he was just an executioner.’
Muhammad Yunus faced legal action during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure when he was charged in several cases, but his supporters condemned it as ‘political vendetta’.
Muhammad Yunus was sentenced to six months in prison earlier this year for violating the country’s labor law. However, he was released on bail and recently acquitted of the charges before taking over as the new chief.
According to the Indian newspaper Economic Times, Sheikh Hasina has claimed that her ouster was a conspiracy by the US, which was angry with her for refusing to hand over control of the island of St. Martin in the Bay of Bengal.
Washington has denied the allegation.
“We have no involvement in this (the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government after the protests in Bangladesh),” White House spokesperson Karen Jean-Pierre said at a press briefing on Monday. Any reports or rumors that the US government is involved in these events are completely false.’
