Patras: One hundred hospital doctors… for a private project

A great interest is registered by the hospital doctors of Patras to practice private work. So far, about 100 doctors of various specialties from the three hospitals, Rio, “Agios Andreas” and Karamandanio, have expressed interest and from September they are expected to follow this professional path as well.

In particular, according to the information given to us by the president of the Medical Association of Patras Anna Mastorakou so far by “Saint Andrew” have declared their intention to carry out a private project 40 doctors, from PGNP 30 and from Karamandanio 15.

“We receive a lot of phone calls from colleagues who wish to do private work as well. Of course, until they reach this point there are many conditions that the colleagues must be informed about so that they are ready for what they will face” Mrs. Mastorakou told us.

In fact, in order to better inform its members, the management of the Medical Association has decided at the end of August and beginning of September to hold an informational meeting on this specific issue.

“The legislative framework under which the colleagues are asked to work is not simple. There are specific requirements regarding facilities, equipment, electronic invoicing and more. Also the operating costs are too much. In order for a colleague to be able to cover them, many working hours are required which, of course, the one who works at the hospital does not have available”, says the president of the Medical Association.

Herself estimates that most will choose co-housing in already operating clinics. “The law allows the co-location of clinics. And perhaps this is the most painless option for many of the colleagues who will choose to practice private work as well.”
In any case, Mrs. Mastorakou states that these changes are causing a disturbance in the medical world. “As you understand, private colleagues also feel the threat of hospitals as the data of supply in the private sector changes.”

Meanwhile, the door is expected to open in the opposite direction soon. That is, private doctors to work in the public system. “The legislative framework exists but a decision must be issued that defines the conditions. For example, the private doctor who will also work in the hospital will pay a fee. This amount has not yet been determined.”

To our question whether there has been any interest from private individuals to join the area’s hospitals, Ms. Mastorakou replied:

“There is interest from some specialties such as surgery, neurologists, pulmonologists, etc. It is important for the colleagues as their membership in a hospital gives the possibility to use sophisticated medical technological equipment and of course a lot of experience due to the volume and severity of the cases treated in the context of a hospital. Of course, everyone is waiting until the relevant decisions are made and several things are clarified.”
