There are thousands of common medications that have a long list of side effects, often including weight gain, fatigue or headaches. But we sometimes don’t pay attention to the fine print that warns us that these drugs can lead to increased libido or hypersexuality.
Hypersexuality is a medical problem that affects desires or behaviors that are intense and difficult to control.
It can lead to stress or health problems, affect your work or relationships, and even lead you to cheat on your spouse.
The Daily Mail Drugs can affect people in a number of ways, and each person taking them has a different experience, but a pharmacist told the British news outlet that there are some drugs that can affect your sex drive. Cravings can escalate to dangerous levels.
Sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen, and neurotransmitters such as dopamine and oxytocin, regulate libido, so hormonal changes or drugs that affect these factors can help reduce said desire.
Dr. Hussain Ahsan told the Daily Mail that side effects of some drugs include this type of increased desire and this is because they interact with the body’s chemistry.
‘For example, dopamine agonists work by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, and because dopamine is closely related to the brain’s reward and pleasure system, it can increase craving.’

Stimulants: Adderall, Concerta, Vyvanse
In 2021, there were approximately 41 million prescriptions written for Adderall and millions more for other stimulants used to treat ADHD.
Adderall contains the stimulant amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, which act on the body’s central nervous system to increase energy and focus.
Stimulants increase the feel-good hormone dopamine as well as norepinephrine in the brain, which affects motivation.
It has caused some users to experience a decrease in libido, but others have reported a huge increase in sex drive.
Sertraline
Sertraline is in the class of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are used to treat anxiety, OCD, panic disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder.
They are often associated with loss of libido, but there is growing evidence that it can trigger hypersexuality, and experts say that sexual side effects are more common in patients taking SSRIs, but these is less reported.
One described how a 55-year-old man was taking sertrulline, which increased his desires and resulted in marital discord.
Aripiprazole
It is used to treat a number of mental health disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, as well as behavioral problems associated with Tourette’s syndrome and autism.
This drug works by regulating dopamine levels in the brain and as a side effect increases sexual desire.
NDRIs: Zyban , Wellbutrin
They are used as antidepressants and as a smoking cessation aid.
Zyban, and similar drugs such as Wellbutrin, is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI).
“Unlike many other antidepressants that can reduce libido, Zyban affects neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine and can lead to increased libido,” Dr Ahmed said.
It works by increasing the levels of these hormones in the brain and contains the active ingredient bupropion.

Pramipexole: Mirapex
It is a common drug used to treat restless leg syndrome (RLS), a condition that causes an almost irresistible compulsion to move your legs. It is also used in Parkinson’s disease. Pramipexole is a dopamine agonist, which means it stimulates dopamine in the brain.
