The sun finally came out over Golden Gate Park on Saturday, albeit not until around 5 p.m., and the day was filled with memorable performances, capped off by a gorgeous set by the Postal Service.
Unlike many Outside Lands weekends before it, the focus this week is on one headliner, and one headliner at that, and that is, of course, Chappell Roan. After her record-breaking attendance at Lollapalooza last weekend and her meteoric rise to superstardom, festival attendees and staff have been discussing Chappelle’s performance at the Polo Grounds on Sunday at 4 p.m. What madness will come with Chappell Roan’s performance – which has been changed from what was originally scheduled to be a later appearance on the Twin Peaks stage.
And there are rumors – still just rumors! — Kamala Harris might make an appearance, or have some kind of air kiss on stage with Chappelle? But we have to look at this.
On Saturday, Sabrina Carpenter, another female pop star who also quickly rose to fame and topped the charts, took to the Lands End stage at the Polo Grounds at 8.45pm . She brought in Kasey Musgraves to cover “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’,” but not everyone in the audience seemed impressed.
Across the way, The Postal Service on the Twin Peaks stage, which attracts a smaller, older Millennial and Gen-X crowd, performs a live version of the band’s 2003 single album, give up. It’s a polished, moving rendering of a limited set of songs, written by Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard alongside musician Jimmy Tamborello, who famously used the U.S. mail to exchange CD-Rs through the mail to put the songs together. Jenny Lewis also joined them as if on the anniversary tour, lending her vocals to a few original songs and joining Ben for an encore of “Such Great” before the band performed a rousing cover of “Depeche” Heights”. The day started with mellow music from the French Cassettes on the Panhandle stage and Colombian guitar duo BALTHVS on the Sutro stage.
Sometimes Bay Area resident K Flay brings her thoughtful brand of hip-hop to the main stage early in the morning, drawing a crowd of fans.
Fletcher also graced the main stage with a lively performance around mid-afternoon.
Two drag show parties at Oasis, Reparations and Princess on Saturday entertained audiences with multiple performances on the Dolores stage.
RuPaul’s Drag Race Winner Yvie Oddly headlined a series of exciting drag performances, including one from Reparations presenter Nicki Jizz. A few hours later, another RuPaul queen, Willow Pill, performed a few songs in the princess section. There is also a boy style show starring Baloney performers.
Singer-songwriter Ryan Beatty showed off his acting chops during an early afternoon set.
Amyl & the Sniffer were undoubtedly the biggest name at this year’s Outside Lands show, delivering some low-tech, high-energy punk rock without the smoke machines or lasers that other acts relied on. Even their background video screens stayed on the same display throughout their 50-minute set, but this band didn’t need special effects to drive the crowd crazy. Lead singer Amy Taylor sounded like a sexier, snobbier Johnny Rotten in a revealing strap-front gold lamé halter top.
As the sun came out, STRFCKR put on a fun, upbeat performance on the Sutro stage in the afternoon.
Anchorage’s Medium Build expressed their gratitude for the cooler weather, after a summer of sweaty music festivals.
One of the highlights of the day was undoubtedly Grace Jones’s main stage performance, which started a little later, she complained of the cold weather and seemed a bit shaky, but she soldiered on and even jumped on the backs of the stagehands Up, through the crowd.
She opened the show in dramatic fashion, wearing a three-story-high Keith Haring dress, riding up in an elevator, which later slowly lowered her down.
Rapper and producer DJ Channel Tres drew a huge Sunset crowd on the Twin Peaks stage.
New Zealand’s Leisure – the self-proclaimed “New Zealand’s hottest boy band” – performed a brilliant electro-pop show on the tiny Panhandle stage, which unfortunately only a handful of people saw as people gathered around mill around and/or take your spot for the show.
Bubblegum pop star Sabrina Carpenter is a stand-in for Tyler the Creator, and her performance couldn’t be more different from his. Carpenter performed a hilarious parody of TV variety shows from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, a deliberately silly Rat Club show in which Carpenter and her background dancers performed throughout the hour and ten minutes. It’s always on the show. This was most likely a tongue-in-cheek reference to what Carpenter actually did, Appearing as a Disney show kid.
But country singer Kacey Musgraves surprised the crowd by popping up on stage and the pair performed a cover of Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’ ”. The announcement stated “Special Guest Kacey Musgraves“)
Beyond that, Carpenter kicked off her set with “Fast Times” and a slew of other hits from her album Email I can’t sendand of course The ubiquitous “espresso” and more from her upcoming releases.
For our money, there was far better music at the other end of the festival, and a great performance by the Postal Service. Below, a few more photos.
