Amman and Washington discuss stopping the escalation in the region and delivering aid to Gaza

Amman – Amman and Washington discussed, on Friday, steps to stop the escalation in the region, and cooperation between them in delivering aid “adequately and immediately” to the Gaza Strip.

This came in the second call between Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and his American counterpart, Anthony Blinken, within 4 days, according to a statement by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.

The statement said that Safadi and Blinken followed up on “the talks they held by phone last Tuesday, regarding the dangerous escalation witnessed in the region and the steps required to stop it.”

Safadi stressed that “stopping the Israeli aggression on Gaza is the first step that must be achieved towards reducing the escalation that threatens security and peace in the region.”

He stressed that “stopping the aggression on Gaza is the goal that all efforts must be combined to achieve and protect because it will save Gaza and its people from the death and destruction imposed on them by the aggression, and will take the region out of the dangerous tension that puts it on the brink of explosion.”

Al-Safadi pointed out “the importance of the statement issued by US President Joe Biden, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, regarding the resumption of negotiations on the exchange deal.”

He pointed out that “Jordan supports the statement and its goal of reaching a prisoner exchange deal (between Israel and the Palestinian factions in Gaza) that results in a permanent ceasefire as soon as possible,” according to the Jordanian statement.

For its part, the US State Department published a statement on its website, confirming that the two sides discussed efforts to calm tensions in the region and prevent further escalation of the conflict.

Blinken stressed, according to the US State Department statement, the urgent need to conclude a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

He stressed that “no party in the region should take actions that would jeopardize the ceasefire in Gaza.”

The US Secretary of State also renewed his thanks to Jordan’s leadership for providing life-saving humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians and promoting regional peace and security.

On Thursday, a tripartite statement was issued by Biden, Sisi, and Emir Tamim, in which they called for resuming truce negotiations next week, “not wasting time, and beginning to implement the ceasefire agreement and prisoner exchange without any delay by any party.”

Safadi and Blinken also discussed “cooperation in delivering adequate and immediate aid to Gaza to confront the humanitarian disaster.”
