One manufacturer that is certainly not sitting idle is BYD. The world’s second-largest electric car maker is consistently rolling out new releases and plans to introduce at least 10 new models for Europe.

A new version

That’s not all; Tesla, China’s primary rival, is also refreshing its extensive lineup. Among its flagship models is the Seal WORLD, a large sedan we saw at the most recent Paris Motor Show in 2022. The car was officially launched that same year, and now, two years later, it’s time for the facelift.

The Chinese manufacturer based in Shenzhen shared the first official details about its new sedan on its Weibo page. Aesthetic changes are minimal; in fact, the car features an identical front design inspired by the ocean. This is why the Seal belongs to the Ocean range, alongside models like the Dolphin and others like the Seagull. The sleek and elegant silhouette remains unchanged, as do the overall dimensions, making the car 4.80 meters long.

So, what are the updates for this new version? In terms of style, the notable changes include a new illuminated logo at the rear and a new purple body color. The latter is also available on the recently updated Han EV.

All in all, customers now have four color options for the Seal: light blue, grey, black, and purple. Inside, the vehicle boasts a slightly redesigned interior, featuring a new dashboard inspired by the Sea Lion 07, a coupe SUV. Additional small improvements have also been introduced.

Among the improvements is the introduction of ambient fragrance. The steering wheel now features a heated option and a new design, while also being equipped with a head-up display projected directly onto the windshield. The large 15.6-inch touchscreen remains unchanged from the previous version, still allowing it to rotate, which sets the car apart from competitors.

Even faster charging

As you might expect, the most significant upgrades are found under the hood of the BYD Seal. The electric sedan is built on the innovative new e-Platform 3.0 Evo, which promises to revolutionize its performance.

This platform is equipped with a “12 in 1” powertrain, which consolidates the motor and various technical components into a single unit, minimizing losses and enhancing efficiency. Additionally, the motor now reaches 23,000 rpm.

Seal WORLD 2024

While it may not be enough to compete with the Xiaomi SU7, the price point will be a major differentiator. The new BYD Seal features an 800-volt architecture, enabling much faster charging capabilities. According to the brand, it takes 20 minutes to charge from 30% to 80%, which is fairly standard (the previous version requires 26 minutes for the same), but an impressive 18 minutes to go from 80% to 100%, which is less common.

Additionally, BYD claims it will maintain these charging times even in colder climates thanks to advanced thermal management systems, including a state-of-the-art heat pump.

This new version also features, for the first time, a LiDAR sensor for enhanced autonomous driving capabilities both in urban settings and on highways. The sedan is equipped with the Disus-C suspension system, which we experienced during our visit to the brand’s headquarters in China.

This refreshed BYD Seal is available in three configurations with two battery sizes, utilizing Blade LFP (lithium iron phosphate) technology:

  • a 228 hp (170 kW) rear motor paired with a 61.44 kWh battery;
  • a 308 hp (230 kW) rear motor paired with an 80.64 kWh battery;
  • two motors (one on each axle for four-wheel drive) producing 523 hp (390 kW) with the 80.64 kWh battery.

This setup offers respective ranges of 510, 650, and 610 km according to the Chinese CLTC cycle. When adjusted to the more realistic European WLTP cycle, these figures translate to approximately 445, 565, and 530 km.

The starting price is already known, set at 175,800 yuan in China, approximately 22,500 euros. This makes it significantly more affordable than the Tesla Model 3, its closest competitor, which starts at 231,900 yuan in China.

However, this price will likely rise when it reaches Europe, especially due to increasing customs duties… unless BYD plans to manufacture it at its factory in Hungary or Turkey, which are currently under construction.

In our country, the sedan is priced starting from 46,990 euros and is no longer eligible for the ecological bonus of 4,000 euros. This BYD Seal “2.0” is already available in China and is expected to arrive in Europe in the coming months.

It is on Weibo that the Chinese manufacturer based in Shenzhen has revealed the first official information about its new sedan, which in fact has not changed much aesthetically. And for good reason, we find a strictly identical front face whose design is inspired by the world of the sea. Hence the fact that the Seal is part of the Ocean range, alongside the Dolphin and others Seagull among others. The very slender and elegant silhouette also remains the same, as do the dimensions. For the record, The car is 4.80 meters long.

But then, what are the changes on this new version? In terms of style, the only one we notice concerns the arrival of a new illuminated logo at the back anda new purple body color. The latter is also offered on the Han EV, which has recently been improved also.

In total, customers now have a choice of four colors for the Seal, with light blue, grey, and black. On board, the car has a slightly reworked presentation, including a new dashboard inspired by the Sea Lion 07, a coupe SUV. Some small improvements have also been made.

The latter should therefore remain rotating, a point which allows the car to stand out from its rivals.

Because the latter is equipped with a “12 in 1” powertrain which combines the engine and many technical elements into a single block. All in order to reduce losses and increase efficiency. In addition, the engine itself is evolving to reach 23,000 rpm.

Thus, the brand announces 20 minutes to go from 30 to 80% which is nothing out of the ordinary (the current version charges from 30 to 80% in 26 minutes), but only 18 minutes to go from 80 to 100% which is much less common.

Also note that BYD announces that it will maintain these charging times even in cold weather thanks to much more advanced thermal management, based in particular on a latest generation heat pump.

In addition, this new version offers for the very first time a LiDAR sensor in order to enjoy even more advanced autonomous driving, both in the city and on the highway.
