Harris Campaign: Tim Walz ‘Misspoke’ About Guns in War

“Governor Walz of Minnesota would never insult or undermine any American’s service to this country — in fact, he thanks Senator Vance for putting his life on the line for our country,” a Harris campaign spokesman said in a statement.

“The governor misspoke when he tried to explain why weapons of war should never be on our streets or in our classrooms,” the spokesman added. “He has taken to weapons of war and believes strongly that only members of the military trained to carry these deadly weapons should have access to them, unlike Donald Trump and J.D. Vance who prioritize the gun lobby over our children.”

The 2018 video shows Walz discussing gun control and referencing his military background.

“We can make sure that the weapons of war that you carried into war are the only place those weapons are,” Walz said in the clip released by the Harris campaign on Tuesday.

Republicans, led by vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance, have criticized Walz’s military service, which included serving in the National Guard but never in a war zone. He retired in 2005, several months before his unit deployed to Iraq.

“I wonder, Tim Walz, when were you in a war?” Vance, a Marine veteran who served in Iraq, said at an event in Michigan. “What was that gun you carried into war? What bothers me about Tim Walz is this bullshit about stolen courage. Don’t pretend to be something you’re not.”

“I would be ashamed if I were him and lied about my military service like he did,” he added.

Democratic candidate Kamala Harris spoke in Glendale, Arizona, to a crowd estimated at more than 15,000 people, on the latest stop on a multi-day tour of swing states with her vice presidential nominee Tim Walz.
