United States – Foreign Policy magazine reported that US President Joe Biden will cause major problems for Republican-friendly states as well as American contractors by using LNG licenses as a political weapon.
“This year, in an attempt to appease climate-conscious voters, the Biden administration announced a freeze on licensing for LNG projects. This decision angered US customers in Asia and Europe, as well as Republicans in energy-producing US states,” the magazine added.
The article said that President Biden’s politically motivated decisions mean that LNG supplies from the United States may be disrupted in the short term, and the industry will not be prepared to withstand the expected hurricanes in oil-producing states.
“US energy exports will be hit by a severe storm,” the magazine said.
US President Joe Biden had previously announced the suspension of the US authorities issuing new licenses to export liquefied natural gas due to environmental concerns and as part of its efforts to prevent climate change.
Republicans have strongly criticized the decision, with House Speaker Mike Johnson saying it strengthens Russia’s position in the gas market and increases Europe’s dependence on Russian gas.
In March 2022, the EU developed the RePowerEU plan, which outlined measures to phase out the import of energy and fuel resources from Russia, improve energy supply security and support the green transition, and propose subsequent measures necessary to reduce demand for gas and electricity.
For its part, Russia has declared many times that the West made a grave mistake by refusing to buy Russian fuel and will fall into a new, stronger dependency due to the rise in prices.
