A Venezuela decided to ban the social network X (formerly Twitter), following an order from President Nicolás Maduro. The block, which will last for 10 days, was requested by the Venezuelan leader, who accused Elon Musk, owner of the platform, of being involved in a hacker attack against the country’s National Electoral Council (CNE). In addition to the ban, the current president heavily criticized the businessman.
Nicolás Maduro bans X in Venezuela and criticizes Elon Musk
Maduro did not hold back in his criticism of the businessman, saying that Musk and the social network X violated the platform’s own rules, promoting hatred, fascism and encouraging internal conflicts in Venezuela. As a result, the president ordered the country’s telecommunications regulator, Conatel (National Telecommunications Commission), to immediately block the social network.
According to reports from the Agence France-Presse (AFP), the blockade began at 9 pm on Thursday (8) and now the social network X can only be accessed in the country through VPNs. Although the blockade is temporary, lasting 10 days, the measure is part of a series of recent actions by the Venezuelan government against social networks.
In recent days, Maduro has also accused other platforms of inciting violence in the country and suggested that citizens migrate to applications such as Telegram and WeChat, instead of WhatsApp.
This is not the first time that Maduro and Musk have publicly clashed. Since the Venezuelan elections, the relationship between the two has been marked by exchanges of accusations on the social network X.
It is worth remembering that, at the moment, countries such as Brazil, Mexico and Colombia do not recognize Maduro’s victory in the elections and demand the publication of the electoral records, increasing international pressure on the Venezuelan government.
