The liberal movement will decide on the candidate in the presidential election, the verdict in the corruption case

“The board of the Liberal Movement will decide on participation in the presidential elections, participation in the European Parliament elections. The decision on the presidential election must be made by the council, but the board, which is elected on Tuesday, must submit a proposal to the council, this is a fundamental decision tomorrow (Tuesday – BNS), “Liberalu sujūda deputy chairman Eugenijus Gentvilas told BNS.

The party’s branches are mainly proposing the candidacy of the leader of the Liberal Movement, Speaker of the Seimas, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, for the presidency, but she has not yet announced her decision on the candidacy.

The Liberal Movement Council will make the final decision on participation in the presidential elections on December 9. Presidential elections in Lithuania will be held next May.

According to E. Gentvilos, the agenda of the board was announced even before the Lithuanian Appellate Court’s verdict in the political corruption case last week, but it is natural that this issue will be discussed during the board meeting.

“Probably the same will arise, maybe it will be necessary to make a decision on an appeal to the Supreme Court of Lithuania on a separate issue, I don’t know if such an issue is foreseen, but apparently it can arise impromptu,” said E. Gentvilas.

The leader of the Liberal Movement, V. Čmilytė-Nielsen, confirmed to journalists last week that she will propose to the party to appeal the decision of the Lithuanian Court of Appeal to the LAT, and that this issue will be considered by the Liberal Board in the near future.

Last Wednesday, the Court of Appeal of Lithuania changed the decision of the court of first instance and sentenced all the defendants in the political corruption case of the concern “MG Grupė” (previously called “MG Baltic”), some of them were sentenced to actual prison sentences.

Almost 377 thousand was allocated to the liberal movement. EUR fine. More than 1.1 million were allocated to “MG Grupa” and the opposition Labor Party, respectively. and more than 301 thousand EUR fines.

Raimondas Kurlianskis, the former vice-president of MG Baltic, Eligijus Masiulis, the leader of the Liberal Movement, Vytautas Gapšys, the “Labor” MP, and ex-liberals Gintaras Steponavičius and Šarūnas Gustainiis were sentenced to prison terms.

The Vilnius District Court acquitted the defendants in this case last year.

The decision of the Court of Appeal enters into force from the day of its publication, but may be appealed to the Supreme Court of Lithuania.
