Yahya Sinwar is the new líder from Hamas

The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas chose Yahya Sinwar as the new head of the group’s political bureau, following the assassination by Israel of Ismail Haniya, an event that occurred in Iran on July 31.

In a statement published this Tuesday, Hamas announced “the selection of Commander Yahya Sinwar as head of the movement’s political bureau, succeeding Commander Ismail Haniya.”

“Hamas expresses its confidence in brother ‘Abu Ibrahim’ (yahya Sinwar’s nom de guerre) as its líder during this sensitive phase and in the face of complex local, regional and international circumstances. Pray to Almighty God to guide you and grant a clear and decisive victory to our people and our cause,” states the communication cited by IRNA.

Sinwar was one of the founders of the Palestinian Islamist movement in the late 1980s.

In 1989, an Israeli court sentenced him to four life sentences. He spent 22 years in prison and was one of more than 1.000 Palestinian detainees freed in 2011 in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who was held by Hamas for five years.

It was the military wing, headed by Sinwar and the also recently deceased Mohamed Deif, commander in chief of the al Qasam Brigades, that planned the October 7 Al Aqsa Storm operation; while the political branch, including the late Haniyeh, only found out when the plan was advanced, international media report.
