Chinese Foreign Minister Discusses Developments in the Middle East with Egyptian, Jordanian Counterparts

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Yi stressed in a conversation with Badr Abdel-Ati that “the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh has exacerbated the situation in the Middle East.”

“This (assassination) violates the basic principles of the UN Charter, violates Iran’s sovereignty and dignity, seriously undermines the efforts of all parties to promote peace, and makes a ceasefire in Gaza more difficult,” he added.

As the Chinese Foreign Minister explained, Beijing strongly condemns the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, and Wang Yi also pointed out that the conflict in the Gaza Strip is the focus of the international community’s attention and threatens to cause a serious humanitarian disaster.

In his conversation with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, Wang Yi stressed that “Haniyeh’s killing is a violation of the basic norms of diplomacy, which leads to further escalation in the region,” and pointed out the need to take coordinated measures that would achieve, as soon as possible, a comprehensive end to the war in Gaza.

“The international community should make a more unanimous statement on this issue and form a united force,” the Chinese minister added, adding that “China will continue to take a firm stance, stand with Arab countries, and support all efforts to achieve a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza, avoid further escalation of the conflict and confrontation, and contribute to de-escalating the situation in the Middle East.”

Fears are growing that the conflict in the Middle East will expand after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in an operation attributed to Israel, and the assassination of leader Fouad Shukr in an Israeli strike in the southern suburbs of Beirut, amid threats by Iran and the groups supported by it to respond.

Israel and the United States are preparing for a response that could drag the region into a broad regional war, in which Iran and its pro-Iranian groups in Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq, the “Axis of Resistance,” will participate against Israel, the United States and the countries allied with them.

In response to the escalating crisis, the United States has strengthened its military presence in the Middle East, sending reinforcements of warships and fighter jets to the region.

General Michael Kurilla, the top US commander in the Middle East, arrived in the region on Saturday, at a sensitive time as the United States and Israel prepare for a possible Iranian retaliatory attack.
