How can watching sports help you lose weight?

According to the study, viewers can burn up to 540 calories over the course of a 90-minute period. To put that in perspective, that’s the equivalent of running for 45 minutes.

In collaboration with Dr Dale Esslinger, a sports scientist at Loughborough University, the team created a formula they called “the power of celebration.”

This formula allows you to calculate your energy expenditure while watching sports on TV, and takes into account five main factors: body weight, how you watch sports, the base time, the intensity of the celebration, and the time of the celebration.

Based on this formula, an 80kg (176lb) football fan watching a 90-minute game while seated and moving around vigorously by jumping, punching the air or screaming for three-quarters of the game could burn up to 540 calories. That would be the equivalent of running for 45 minutes.

A tennis fan of the same weight watching a three-hour match while sitting and talking, and celebrating moderately with lots of clapping and cheering, could burn up to 432 calories, which could be equivalent to swimming for 60 minutes.

Meanwhile, a sports fan of the same weight who watches the game for 60 minutes while sitting and moderately interacts by jumping on his feet and walking for a quarter of the time can burn up to 162 calories, which would be equivalent to walking for 30 minutes.

Finally, a shooting fan of the same weight who watches a game for 60 minutes while sitting and physically interacts by clapping and biting nails a quarter of the time can burn up to 106 calories, which would be equivalent to a 15-minute session.

“Watching sports is positively associated with well-being and vitality,” said Dr Esslinger. “By combining how we watch sports and the intensity of our celebrations, and considering factors including body weight and total duration, our innovative celebration power formula allows sports fans to measure their energy expenditure while enjoying the excitement of the games.”

The research comes shortly after a study found that playing video games can help you lose weight.

Research by Stakester revealed that male gamers can burn a whopping 420 calories during a two-hour gaming session, while female gamers can burn up to 472 calories, the equivalent of doing 1,000 sit-ups.
