MEMBER of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Taufik Basari, urged investigators from the West Sumatra Regional Police to immediately exhumate the body of the late Afif, which until now has not received a response.

Taufik said that the West Sumatra Regional Police, who were also present at the hearing (RDP) with Commission III of the DPR on Monday (5/8), had issued the exhumation order.

“Given the exhumation deadline that will soon end, and of course now, it is also quite difficult to get accurate results for quite a long time. But it must still be done,” said Tobas, as quoted on Tuesday (6/8).

The Nasdem Party faction politician emphasized that Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives is committed to continuing to oversee the investigation of this case.

He wants the truth to be revealed and justice to be realized, including for the other 18 people who experienced torture. He regrets that the West Sumatra Regional Police have not taken sufficiently progressive steps regarding the torture incident.

“Therefore, I want to urge the Regional Police to prosecute the perpetrators of the torture. Not only about ethics,” he explained.

“Why? Because we have ratified the convention on torture through Law Number 5 of 1998, which means that every act of torture in Indonesia must be punished, including the perpetrators of torture in this case,” Tobas emphasized.

Tobas said that recent cases, such as Afif’s case, Dini’s case, the deaths of Eki and Vina, and so on, will further distance public trust in the legal process. Be it the process carried out by law enforcers or even the courts.

“That’s why we have to learn from experience, don’t let things like this continue,” said Tobas.

Tobas explained that Commission III always tries to respond when injustice occurs in society.

“We hope that this legal state will be upheld, law enforcement officers will act professionally, and the courts will be able to bring justice to the community,” he concluded. (P-5)
