CHELSEA coach Enzo Maresca says Premier League regulations on financial sustainability are to blame for the exodus of players
akademi The Blues.

“The reason is not Chelsea, but these rules. All Premier League clubs are forced to sell academy players because of the regulations.
” claimed Maresca, Tuesday (6/8).

Chelsea have lost their best academy players in at least the last two years, such as Mason Mount, Lewis Hall, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ian Maatsen and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Most recently, for the 2024-2025 season, The Blues also had to let Conor Gallagher move to Atletico Madrid.

Furthermore, Armando Broja and Trevoh Chalobah are also expected to leave Chelsea at the end of August.

“It’s a shame. In Italy, we have a figure like Francesco Totti who played for AS Roma for 20 years. A man of the same club. We like that in football, the fans want to see it too. But with that rule, it’s different compared to
past. If you want to protect academy players, maybe yes (the rules should be changed),” said the Italian coach.

The Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules limit clubs’ losses in the competition to a maximum of 105
million pounds sterling (US$134 million) over three years.

Last season, Everton and Nottingham Forest were docked points for breaking the rule, while newly promoted Leicester City were hit with a similar rule in 2022-23.

In order not to violate the regulation, Chelsea must work hard to collect their funds again after spending one
billion pounds sterling (US$1.3 billion) on their last four transfer occasions.

This was done with the aim of overhauling the squad under new leadership, namely LA Dodgers baseball club co-owner Todd Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital.

As for Gallagher, Chelsea’s captain for the last two seasons due to Reece James’ injury, he has reportedly flown to Spain to join Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £33 million.

The 24-year-old footballer reportedly rejected a two-year contract extension offered by Chelsea.

Regarding Gallagher’s move, Maresca said that currently there is an agreement between the player and the club regarding whether to stay or move.

“That kind of thing happens at every club, every time we go into the summer. In the end, there will be a decision that will be made.”
“pleasing all parties,” concluded Maresca. (Ant/Z-1)
