Specialized workshop for free repair of wheelchairs in Mardan

Workshop founder Sajjad Ahmed, himself a special person, told Independent Urdu that his shop has so far repaired 1,500 wheelchairs free of charge.

Asked about the motivation behind starting the workshop, he said: ‘When my own wheelchair broke down, there was no craftsman to repair it, while spare parts were also hard to come by. I adjusted my wheelchair and went about my business.’

This incident gave him the idea to set up a workshop where apart from repairing wheelchairs, parts used in them are also available.

Initially, he started this workshop in his room, where he used to repair wheelchairs used by special persons free of charge.

‘I opened a workshop called the Wheelchair Mobility Shop in 2018, which now has 15 other special persons working with me as volunteers.’

Sajjad Ahmad said that the presence of a wheelchair repair workshop in Mardan has made it easier for disabled people and now people from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab also contact to get their wheelchairs repaired.

According to Sajjad, 4700 special persons are registered in Mardan, the second largest city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in terms of population, in which 400 wheelchairs are given free of charge to the needy every year.

In his workshop, Sajjad Ahmed also makes changes in the safety wheel and kick of normal motorbikes to make it suitable for special persons.

He said that by making changes to the vehicle in his workshop, it can also be used by special persons. “Even if someone has no legs, he will be able to drive this modified vehicle.”

On the other hand, Sajjad Ahmed has also started teaching sewing, embroidery and fashion designing for disabled girls.
