Relatives of activist Edni López went to the Ombudsman’s Office in Caracas on Tuesday, August 6, to ask authorities for information about the charges against her.
Ninoska Barrios, mother of Edni López, said that the activist was detained after being notified that her passport had been retained because it was “expired or cancelled.”
“My daughter had a trip because she was invited by her university classmates. She was very excited to meet up with her friends. Give me back my daughter, it is not fair that a Venezuelan mother has to go through this,” said the mother in statements to the media.
López’s family reported that they had no further contact with Edni since Sunday, August 4 at 9:30 a.m., just after authorities at the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía prevented him from boarding a scheduled flight.
The NGO Foro Penal recorded 1,102 arrests on Tuesday, August 6, in the context of the protests that have taken place since July 29, 2024. Of the more than 1,000 detainees, at least 100 are teenagers.

On Tuesday, August 6, Inaesin recorded 18 labor protests in July 2024, the lowest number of such conflicts so far in 2024. With this figure, there have been 343 labor protests so far this year.
Most of the demonstrations took place in the Capital District (50%), followed by the state of Bolívar (16.67%) and Miranda (11.11%).
Representatives of the education sector accounted for 44.44% of the total number of claims, while workers in basic industries and the media accounted for 11.11% of each sector.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira spoke on Tuesday, August 6, by telephone with his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares, and both insisted on the need for the minutes of the electoral process in Venezuela to be made public.

Venezuelan athlete Joselyn Brea secured her place in the 1,500-meter repechage at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Tuesday, August 6.
Brea finished 15th in the women’s 1,500-meter flat event, clocking a time of 4:13.77 in Heat 1.
For her part, the Creole Rosa Rodríguez obtained an Olympic diploma by placing eighth in the hammer throw after achieving a mark of 72.98m in her first Olympic final and fourth Olympic Games.
