Overall evolution of unemployment

The number of unemployed people in Switzerland rose by 3,198 people (+3.1%) to 107,716 in July 2024. This represents an increase of 23.0% or 20,115 people compared to July 2023. The unemployment rate remained stable at 2.3%.

Unemployment rate by age group

The youth unemployment rate (15-24 years old) increased by 10.7% in July, with 9,901 unemployed young people, up 23.3% from the previous year. The number of unemployed people aged 50 to 64 increased by 1.0% to 29,869, an increase of 18.4% in one year.

In July 2024, there were 179,139 registered job seekers, up 2.4% from the previous month. This figure increased by 18.9% annually. The seasonally adjusted job search rate rose by 0.1 percentage point to 4.1%.

Open Positions

In July 2024, 36,674 job vacancies were advertised to the ORP, a decrease of 7.4% from the previous month. Of these, 18,290 jobs were subject to notification obligations. This is a decrease of 25.5% compared to the previous year.

Reduce working hours

In May 2024, the reduction in working hours affected 4,798 people, a decrease of 20.4% from April 2024. The number of businesses affected also decreased, to 223.

Arrival at the end of the right

In May 2024, 2,497 people exhausted their unemployment benefit entitlements, an increase of 34.5% from April 2024.

New Document

From August 2024, SECO will publish the “Labour Market Situation” document in a modernized format, including clear tables and charts, as well as new statistics on the duration of unemployment and the possibility of returning to work.
