On Tuesday, August 6, Venezuela was present in three disciplines of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games: athletics, Greco-Roman wrestling and hammer throwing. Joselyn Brea, Raiber Rodríguez and Rosa Rodríguez participated in the competition day.

The Olympic Games, in which 33 athletes from the Venezuelan delegation are participating, began on July 26 with an opening ceremony and started with the sporting events on July 27.

Athletics

Venezuelan runner Joselyn Brea finished 15th in her heat in the women’s 1,500-meter race. The athlete will seek a place in the semifinals in the repechage on Wednesday, August 7, at 6:45 a.m. Venezuela time.

“A little exhausted, but when you are running and you hear those screams it is too nice. I am quite tired and I had to take advantage of the opportunity after earning my place (…) If this will be my last race I am happy and I will go home to continue working to keep growing and run among the best,” Brea said in an interview with Claro Sport.

The Venezuelan Olympic Committee said that if Brea finishes among the top three in her series in the repechage, she will have the opportunity to advance to the final.

Greco-Roman fight

Venezuelan wrestler Raiber Rodriguez lost to North Korean Ri Se Ung (8-0) in the fight for the bronze medal in the men’s 60-kilogram category of Greco-Roman wrestling.

Rodriguez made his debut with a 6-5 victory over Azerbaijan’s Murat Mammadov in the round of 16 on August 5. In the quarterfinals he fell 5-3 to China’s Liguo Cao, which led him to the play-offs.

After beating Egyptian Moamen Mohamed 12-1, the 33-year-old fighter had the opportunity to fight for the bronze medal, which he ultimately did not get.

Hammer throw

Venezuelan athlete Rosa Rodríguez participated in the women’s hammer throw final, where she obtained an Olympic diploma after finishing in eighth place with her best throw, achieved in the second round, in which she reached 72.98 meters.

Her first attempt was 71.02 metres, she was fouled on her third attempt, her fourth attempt was 71.22 metres and her fifth attempt was 70.85 metres. Her last chance to improve her mark was on her sixth attempt, when she was fouled.
