There is one month left until the Venezuelan national soccer team returns to action in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in Mexico, the United States and Canada.
Next Thursday, September 5, La Vinotinto will face its Bolivian counterpart at the Municipal Stadium of El Alto, located 4,090 meters above sea level (masl), for the seventh date of the World Cup.
This venue is well-known for its name, as it is among the highest in the world. This represents a great challenge for the team led by the Argentine Fernando “Bocha” Batista, as there is a considerable difference between the aforementioned field and the Hernando Siles in La Paz, where the team from the highlands had been playing, and which is located at 3,600 meters above sea level.
It is worth remembering that for decades there has been talk about how difficult it is to play football matches in these conditions, as those who are not used to it often have difficulty breathing due to the lack of oxygen. Likewise, there are players who have mentioned that the ball moves differently, among other difficulties.
The Venezuelan team has a record of one win, one draw and two losses in its last four visits to Bolivia, all in La Paz. It remains to be seen whether there is any special preparation by the Venezuelan coaching staff for the match, scheduled for 4:00 pm local time.
Back to Maturin
The eighth round of the qualifiers will take place on Tuesday the 10th of next month. There, Venezuela will return to the Monumental stadium in Maturín, Monagas state, to receive the Uruguayan national team.
The national team has two wins (Paraguay and Chile) and one agreement (Ecuador) in what has become its stronghold on the road to the 2026 World Cup. Combined with the two draws away from home against Brazil and Peru (they only lost against Colombia) it leaves a balance of nine points in six dates, to place fourth.
