Located in the middle of the desert in the African country of Chad, this infamous prison is used to house members of the terrorist organization Boko Haram. The prison also houses Chadian rebels, making the prison a very volatile place.

In 2022, the army that ran the prison was blamed for the deaths of protesters held there, and recently A new report by Human Rights Watch (HRW). It highlights what is happening inside the prison.

The report said that six protesters who were taken to jail died, the bodies were loaded onto trucks and dumped somewhere.

The report claimed that the prison has two sections (Koro Toro 1 and Koro Toro 2) run by the military, and that the military has actually given control of these parts to Boko Haram-affiliated inmates.

Punishments at the site include tying prisoners by their ankles to iron bars and leaving them there for “several weeks”, solitary confinement and cells with bare beds.

H&W found that children as young as 13 were sometimes kept in the same room with adults for up to two weeks.

The report claimed that ‘During the first two weeks, the prisoners slept on bare floors until mattresses were provided by the International Committee of the Red Cross. While medical treatment was only available on Koro Toro 2’.

‘In Kuro Toro 1, the health care was substandard and there was only one prisoner who was referred to as a nurse and said to be a Boko Haram fighter in Cameroon.’

“Human Rights Watch documented at least six cases of detainees who received no medical care, were injured en route to the detention center, where they were beaten and died in Koro Toro. gone.’

In 2023, a journalist was held in this prison, who said that ‘we slept on the floor, and there were between 20 and 30 people in each cell’.

He said that if we refused to do forced labor, the soldiers would have tied iron weighing 12 to 16 kg to our feet. They were tied so tightly that they caused sores, which then became infected’.

The journalist further said that the prison officials forced the inmates to pick up the bodies of the dead and throw them in the sand.

HRW has now called on the Chadian government to completely shut down Koro Tour 1, and to undertake extensive work on Koro Tour 2, as well as several others.
