China braces for impending flooding amid forecast of rain

The Ministry of Emergency Management of China is preparing for possible flooding, in this regard he called on the country’s authorities to be alert, since heavy rains are expected in some areas during the next few days.

Heavy rainfall is expected in the northeast region, the Yellow River and Huaihe River basins, and southern China’s Yunnan province.

The ministry said water levels continue to exceed alert thresholds in the Liaohe River and a section of the Songhuajiang River, both located in the northeast.

The ministry has asked relevant departments and industries to fulfill their responsibilities and be alert to potential disasters caused by the rains.

The agency has called for stronger security management of waterside tourist sites and on roads near mountainsides and cliffs.

It also calls for intensified drainage and epidemic prevention work, as well as speeding up post-disaster work.

It is worth remembering that in recent summers, China has suffered serious meteorological disasters: in 2023, floods in Beijing left more than 30 dead, while in 2022 extreme heat waves and droughts were recorded in the centre and east of the country.

In July 2021, rainfall intensity was unprecedented in decades, leaving nearly 400 dead in the central province of Henan. The Chinese government said this was due to a lack of preparation and risk perception by local authorities.
