French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed on Monday that, together with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, he supports the Venezuelan people’s aspiration for a “transparent election.”

“Together with President Lula, we support the Venezuelan people’s aspiration for a transparent election. This demand is at the heart of any democracy,” Macron said in a message on the social network X, published in French, Portuguese and Spanish.

The French president held a telephone conversation with Lula on Monday to thank him for the position he has adopted alongside Colombia and Mexico in the face of the Venezuelan electoral crisis.

The call took place while the Brazilian leader was in Santiago de Chile on a state visit, the Brazilian presidency said.

The exchange between the two heads of state came after Brazil, Mexico and Colombia issued a statement last week urging Venezuelan authorities to “expeditiously” publish data “broken down by voting table” from the July 28 elections.

This weekend, France, along with Spain, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal, demonstrated in a similar way to those Latin American nations.

Specifically, they demanded that “the Venezuelan authorities publish all voting records without delay in order to guarantee the full transparency and integrity of the electoral process.”
