Organ donation: an altruistic act improves the quality of life of several patients

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Hospital de Clínicas registered a new altruistic act of cadaveric donation this week, which improved the quality of life of two kidney patients, in addition to others who received corneas.

The Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Asunción highlighted that this was the 176th kidney transplant performed in the clinics since the reactivation of the transplant program in 2014.

Kidney transplant coordinator Dr. Norma Arévalos Galeano explained that the recipient of the organ is a 68-year-old male, a retired police officer, who received hemodialysis treatment for 9 years at the Rigoberto Caballero Hospital.

“The procurement took place in the Adult Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital de Clínicas; the organ ablation was then carried out, which began at 7:00 p.m., while the transplant began at 12 noon and ended at 5:00 a.m. this morning,” said Dr. Arévalos yesterday, Tuesday.

He said that the other kidney was for another patient from the Social Security Institute (IPS). Corneas were also donated, which also improve the quality of life of other people.

The multidisciplinary team of the FCMUNA was made up of nephrologists, urologists, vascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, therapists, residents in training in each specialty. In addition to the nursing team, assistants and staff from the Blood Bank, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Social Work areas, among others involved.
