Klagenfurt(OTS) –

The annual Equal Pensions Day marks the start of a period when men already receive as much pension as women until the end of the year. In Carinthia, the average pension gap between men and women is 39.3% (all pensions: men 2,186 euros; women 1,326 euros). This means that Carinthia’s “Equal Pensions Day” in 2024 will be on August 8. The pension gap across Austria is 40.1%, and the national “Equal Pensions Day” is scheduled for August 6, 2024.

“The pension gap reflects the income and labor market discrimination that women continue to experience throughout their working lives. Women continue to bear the majority of unpaid care work for children and relatives in need of care, and therefore often work part-time. In addition, women dominate All of this has a financial impact on retirement, but the government has no current plans to close the pension gap.

The higher the income while working, the higher the pension. Even a brief part-time phase can have a significant impact on your lifetime earnings. Oberauna said the basis for fair pension calculations could be laid by creating framework conditions that enable women to work full-time, such as expanded childcare facilities and flexible working time models.

“In Carinthia we have already taken important steps with regard to scholarships for children and amendments to the Child Education and Care Act. But the federal government also needs to take decisive steps – including establishing a legal basis for salary transparency – and the model here could be Iceland’s Equal Pay Act, which also provides for sanctions and a reversal of the burden of proof on companies, means companies must prove that higher pay is actually justified, Oberauna said.

“If we continue at this pace, it will take more than 100 years to close the pension gap – which cannot be our goal. To close the pension gap, there is no way around universal childcare, the opportunity for full-time work and legally binding The Wage Transparency Resolution. We don’t need “grandparents leave” but a federal government that supports women.
