Spanish women’s singles badminton coach Carolina Marin, Fernando Rivas, revealed the condition of the injury Marin suffered during her semifinal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Sunday (4/8).
“Carolina knows that in the Olympics, you can win or lose. However, (she did not expect to lose) in this way,” Rivas said as quoted by BetweenMonday (5/8).
Meanwhile, Marin withdrew from the Paris Olympics badminton semifinals in tears and injured. She decided to withdraw from the tournament after failing to recover midway through the second game against He Bing Jao (China).

The 31-year-old eventually got up and walked gingerly off the field, then put the brace back on.
However, he could barely move, losing the next two points before falling to the court again, clearly in pain, and crying uncontrollably.

After the match, he refused to use a wheelchair and limped out of the arena to thunderous applause from the Paris crowd, some of whom were moved by his efforts.

Marin herself was a strong favorite to win the title at the last two Olympics, in Tokyo and Paris. However, in her preparation for Tokyo, she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury a few months before the event. It was her second ACL injury.

“He’s in pain, that’s a sensation he already felt,” said Rivas, who hinted that he may have suffered the same serious injury again.
Marin’s painful resignation drew sympathy from fellow Spaniards such as tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, basketball legend Pau Gasol and film star Antonio Banderas.
On the other hand, He admitted to being sad about Marin’s condition, even though this means she will be racing into the final to meet world number one player An Se Young (South Korea).
“He played very well and I was very passive. I didn’t think about the final at all,” He said.
With Marin’s withdrawal from the Olympics, Indonesian women’s singles player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung is entitled to a bronze medal at the 2024 Olympics. (Z-6)
