It is reported that the Yoon Seok-yeol defamation case investigation office has investigated the communications of former Democratic Party representative Lee Jae-myung and other political figures, and the impact may be further expanded.

More targets emerged one after another, including MBC reporters, former and current presidents, and opposition party lawmakers and aides.

Opposition parties called it a broad political and media check and expected fact-finding and a harsh response.

I am reporter Kim Jung-woo.

This is the text message received by MBC Newsroom reporters.

On January 4, the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office searched the names, phone numbers and other information of telecommunications users for investigation purposes.

I received the notice on August 4, two days after the statutory notice period of seven months.

Our reporter has been interviewing Shin Shin-lim, a former expert of “Newstapa” since September last year during the investigation of President Yoon Seok-yeol’s defamation case.

The report on the president’s alleged obstruction of the Busan Savings Bank investigation was made in March 2022, presumably because prosecutors conducted a search and seizure and called in a tip a year and a half later.

“(President Yun Seok-yeol) said about the communications investigation of the investigative agency, ‘This is what the Gestapo did.’ The Yoon Seok-yeol regime is the real Nazi regime. The rule of the Gestapo…”

In the political world, dozens of active lawmakers and aides, including former Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, and lawmakers Choo Mi-ae and Kim Seung-won, were found to have received notices about communications investigations while at the Fatherland Innovation Party. , Representative Shin Jang-sik was informed of the communications investigation.

“(Prosecutors) must disclose whether they have inquired about Kim Kun-hee’s communication information in the luxury bag case.”

Media and civil society groups also criticized, saying that “even local media reporters who had nothing to do with the incident were listed as targets of communication information”, calling this an “unprecedented ‘inspection'”.

[윤창현/전국언론노조 위원장]

“The prosecutor’s intention is to use a dragnet to rob reporters by over-investigating communications information, and drag out the case like a public security agency case during the military dictatorship…”

While demanding data from prosecutors, the Democratic Party and the opposition decided to question the details of the communications investigation at the impeachment hearing of Kang Baek-shin, the prosecutor in charge of investigating President Yoon’s defamation case.
