Aurora Silva, wife of Freddy Superlano, went to the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) located in El Helicoide (in Caracas) to demand proof of life of the opposition leader, who was detained by agents of the Venezuelan State.

“It has been six days since my husband, Freddy Superlano, was kidnapped. He is a fighter for this country. He has worked hard to recover freedom and democracy through elections, as was demonstrated on July 28. (…) I demand proof of life for Freddy Superlano and for all those unjustly detained in our country,” Silva said in a video posted on the social network X.

The wife of the national coordinator of the Voluntad Popular party said that she had not received a response from the officials assigned to that Sebin headquarters and denounced that the government of Nicolás Maduro has undertaken an escalation of arrests after the presidential elections.

“They (Sebin) deny that they have it here (in El Helicoide), just like Roland Carreno “We are already aware of the more than 1,000 leaders kidnapped by the regime. We are extremely distressed and desperate as a family. His daughters (those of Freddy Superlano) are distressed, crying and begging for their father to be returned to them,” he added.

According to Aurora Silva, both Renzo Salinas and Rafael Garcia, who are assistants to Freddy Superlano and were also detained by the armed officers, have already been released by the authorities.

“I learned that the people who accompanied him were released, but nothing of Freddy. There was no official arrest warrant, his only crime was fighting for freedom,” he added in an interview given on August 5 to the news portal VPItv.

What the Attorney General said about Freddy Superlano

Tarek William Saab, Attorney General of the Republic, assured on August 1 that the opposition leader Freddy Superlano, national coordinator of the opposition party Voluntad Popular (VP), is in good health, after his arrest on July 30, 2024.

“He is in good health and is cooperating. Apart from admitting some of the things we have been describing here (…). He is providing more interesting information, because we have already identified a larger group of those who have participated in this attack on the data update system of the National Electoral Council (CNE),” said the prosecutor.

Saab said that the Prosecutor’s Office linked Superlano to the alleged hacking that, according to authorities, the CNE suffered on Sunday, July 28, when the presidential election was taking place, which delayed the totalization of the election results.

“He was visited by prosecutors assigned to the general division of human rights, (he is) protected in his place of confinement but cooperating, providing important elements that we will gradually reveal,” added the Attorney General of the Republic.

The arrest of Roland Carreno

The arrest of Freddy Superlano is also followed by that of journalist and member of the Voluntad Popular party Roland Carreño, which occurred on August 2. This incident was denounced by the National Union of Press Workers (SNTP).

“Carreño was unjustly imprisoned between October 2020 and October 2023, accused of the alleged crime of ‘terrorism and conspiracy,'” the organization added on its X account (formerly Twitter).

Roland Carreño will have his first public trial after 18 months of detention

Details of Carreño’s arrest and the current whereabouts of the journalist are still unknown.

Gerardo Blyde, head of the delegation of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) in the negotiations with the ruling party, announced on October 18, 2023 the release of Carreño after almost three years in detention. The journalist was arrested on October 26, 2020when he was accused of allegedly carrying weapons to “promote violent actions.”
