Nestlé Canada is recalling Gerber brand infant rice cereal because they may be contaminated with bacteria, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said Sunday.
The oat, banana and mango cereals would have been sold in Quebec, but also in Ontario, New Brunswick, the Prairies and British Columbia.
This baby product may be contaminated with Cronobacter spp.
This bacterium “can cause rare blood and central nervous system infections and is associated with severe intestinal infection (necrotizing enterocolitis) and blood poisoning (sepsis), particularly in newborns,” noted reminder table.
However, it is “usually not associated with human disease, but in rare cases can cause serious or even fatal infections”.
The CFIA clearly states that “no cases of illness have been reported associated with consumption of this product” and invites people not to eat or use these 227-gram Gerber cereals, which have a UPC code of 0 65000 13361 5.
