Brazil: Rescuers rescued a horse from the roof of a farmhouse – 2024-08-05 16:05:51

Volunteers, veterinarians and rescuers managed to save a horse that had been trapped for two days on the roof of a building in a town in southern Brazil that has been inundated by floodwaters.

The horse, on the sloping roof of a farmhouse, was spotted Wednesday by a television network helicopter on the outskirts of Canoa, a town north of Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul state. The mayor of Canoas, Jorge da Silva, appealed to the authorities to save the animal, so that it does not fall from the roof.

Volunteers who rallied to help said the horse had been wandering the flooded areas for four days. With the help of army vets, rescuers managed to remove it and put it on an inflatable to take it to safety.

Unprecedented flooding caused by torrential rains in the Rio Grande do Sul has left 107 people dead and another 136 missing in cities where roads have turned into rivers. Another 164,000 people have been forced to flee their homes and forecasters predict the rains will continue in the coming days.
