Russia: One of the cancer vaccines may become available to patients this year

“Experts from the Agency’s leading scientific organizations are developing cancer vaccines to treat colorectal cancer, melanoma and glioblastoma – one of the most aggressive and rapidly developing forms of malignancy. The vaccine against colorectal cancer has already completed full-scale studies and pre-clinical testing and is ready for use in clinical practice,” she says.

It is worth noting that the vaccines developed by the experts are classified as biotechnological medical products intended for use according to individual prescriptions. That is, they are manufactured for a specific patient. They will become available to patients after the amendments come into force this year.

Vasily Lazarev, Deputy Director General of the Lopukhin Scientific Center of Physical and Chemical Medicine, General Coordinator of the Project for the Development of Anti-Oncology Vaccines, notes that the vaccine is intended for treatment by activating the patient’s specific cellular immune response, and not for preventing cancer.

According to Skvortsova, the advantage of these vaccines is that they search for new individual antigens and in the way they are administered to the patient, the method of delivery is determined individually for each patient. That is, they can be with adjuvant peptides. They can also be packaged in nanoproteins in the form of mRNA in liposomes using viral vectors and also on stem cells.
