Edmundo González: “Only with the truth will Venezuela move forward in this critical moment”

  • The candidate of the Democratic Unitary Platform wrote an article in the British media The Economist In which he stressed that his campaign command managed to support the election results with evidence

Edmundo González Urrutia, candidate of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), reaffirmed on August 4 that the result of the presidential elections of July 28 gave him victory with 67% of the votes.

Their position is based on the 81% of the electoral records that the Comando Con Venezuela digitized and published on a website for review by Venezuelan citizens and the international community.

However, the National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed Nicolás Maduro as re-elected president without having published the data as stipulated in the Electoral Process Regulations in the country.

“The government has proclaimed false and unprovable results, they must be rejected and impartially verified. Only with the truth will Venezuela move forward at this critical moment,” González stressed in a letter written and published by the British media. The Economist.

The diplomat said he had obtained a large and indisputable majority, which has been demonstrated by the data issued by the automated voting system in the majority of the approximately 16 thousand polling stations in the country.

“This result is in line with the results of the most prestigious polls conducted before the elections, as well as with exit polls and quick counts conducted on election day,” the opposition candidate said.

He added that members of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) who were present at the voting centers witnessed the results obtained.

Unequal political campaign

The letter published by González on his X account also reveals why he accepted the responsibility of the presidential candidacy, with the support of opposition leader María Corina Machado.

“I decided to accept the candidacy because I considered it a duty to my country and to my conscience as a citizen who believes that the ballot box is the means by which the people must decide who represents them and who governs them,” the diplomat said. The Economist.

However, he also stressed that the political campaign was not only brief but also uneven, due to “restrictions and abuses of power” by the Maduro government.

González recalled that he promised a democratic, constitutional and orderly transfer of power, to form a government dedicated to promoting national reconciliation that could solve the crisis affecting the lives of Venezuelans.

“This crisis is so serious that some 8 million of my compatriots – a quarter of the population – have emigrated in the last decade,” the candidate wrote in his letter.

The PUD candidate stressed that he has served the country all his life as a diplomat until he retired during the presidency of Hugo Chávez as Venezuela’s ambassador to Argentina.

Edmundo González promises to defend the votes

For González, defending the vote means showing the truth about what the majority of Venezuelans decided in the presidential elections.

“What I defend is respect for the free and peaceful will of our people. It would be contrary to my principles and my lifelong career to advocate any kind of violence, much less a coup d’état,” said the politician.

However, he said that Maduro’s government appears to be willing to stay in power by any means possible, “including the use of violence.”

He also urged Western powers and other democratic countries around the world to reject the results offered by the CNE without publishing the minutes that would prove the veracity of the figures offered.

The logical and fair thing to do is to urgently carry out a competent and impartial verification of the election results, as Latin American governments have proposed. Only through the truth will Venezuela find a way to get through this critical moment,” said the PUD candidate.

González stressed that as a “man of peace” he will continue on this path until he finds a way to resolve the situation “in a responsible manner” that recognizes the truth of the election results.
