the nudist planar hifi headset for millionaires

The flagship of the brand Hifiman, excluding the electrostatic assembly Shangri-La (a competitor of the Sennheiser Orpheus), the Susvara is regarded by many as the ultimate achievement in planar technology. It is an exceptional product, albeit very expensive (around 6000 euros). The new version, Susvara Unveiled, aims to enhance this formula even further… and does so at a steep price.

A Headset and Its Shield

Highly recognizable for its nearly standard design for a Hifiman headset, the classic Susvara has evolved into a slightly different product. The Susvara Unveiled remains an open planar headset but distinguishes itself in several ways. First, the round earcups have been replaced with slightly more oval ones, featuring a pointed lower section.

The structure (earcups and arms) is still visibly aluminum, which is a bit disappointing considering the price point. The incorporation of carbon fiber and/or magnesium would have emphasized a luxurious design. However, the integration of leather components, such as the pads (leather exterior, fabric interior), as well as the openwork elastic headband, is a positive touch. The steel headband continues the very flat design of its predecessor. Weighing in at 430 g, the Susvara Unveiled is relatively lightweight for a planar headset, especially compared to some competitors that exceed 600 g.

What truly sets this device apart from others is the completely open design of its transducer. Unlike other open HiFi headphones, it does not feature a protective grid. The manufacturer provides a magnetic protective plate that can be attached to the back when the headset is not in use.

I Reveal Everything to You

This completely open design is not without purpose, allowing a clearer understanding of the term Unveiled. Hifiman notes that the inclusion of protective grilles or Venetian blind structures (as present in the original Susvara) consistently limits the sound capabilities of the transducers. To avoid this drawback, the brand has opted to eliminate this element entirely. In fact, it is impossible to create a more open architecture than that of the Susvara Unveiled. However, Hifiman takes a significant risk regarding the product’s durability. The powerful neodymium magnets and the thin flat membrane mean that even a small, sharp object could potentially damage the transducer. By offering a protective shield, the manufacturer minimizes breakage but can’t eliminate it entirely during use. This will need to be evaluated over time.

As anticipated, the open design is not the only enhancement, as the transducer has also undergone significant improvements. The first change involves the introduction of a Stealth Magnet magnetic structure, featuring neodymium magnets with an optimized shape to minimize (acoustic) turbulence and diffraction. Another enhancement is the switch to a flat silver coil (a better electrical conductor) instead of the previously used gold-coated copper coil. Questions may arise regarding the benefits of using a silver coil versus copper and its resistance to oxidation.

Finally, the centerpiece of the device is undoubtedly the ultra-thin membrane, utilizing Nanometer Thickness Diaphragm technology. The term Nanometer should be viewed with some skepticism, as the thickness of this component is not in the order of a nanometer (one billionth of a meter) but, as Hifiman specifies, around a millionth of a meter, which is already quite impressive.
An improvement over the original Susvara (83 dB), the sensitivity of the Susvara Unveiled is rated at 86 dB. It is worth noting that we are still discussing one of the most challenging headphones to drive on the market. Hifiman certainly recommends pairing it with one of its high-end DACs/amplifiers: ‘EF1000… which comes at the cost of 15,000 euros in France.
Now available, the Hifiman Susvara Unveiled headset retails for 8800 euros. While this equipment is undoubtedly extraordinary, the continuously rising prices in the high-end sector are pushing this market further into a niche accessible only to very affluent enthusiasts.

The Hifiman Susvara Unveiled: A New Era in Planar Headphone Technology

A Legacy of Excellence: Hifiman and Planar Technology

Hifiman has long been celebrated for its pioneering advancements in planar magnetic headphone technology. The Susvara, their flagship model, is widely regarded as the zenith of this technology, offering unparalleled audio fidelity. However, with the introduction of the Susvara Unveiled, Hifiman aims to push the boundaries even further. Priced at approximately €8,800, it promises enhancements that may justify its premium tag.

Design Evolution: A Helmet and Its Shield

The Susvara Unveiled brings a fresh aesthetic while retaining some design elements from its predecessor. The most noticeable change is its oval ear cups, contrasted against the previous round design. This subtle tweak not only alters its appearance but also contributes to its acoustic performance.

While the shells and headband are constructed from aluminum, which some may view as lacking in luxury, the integration of genuine leather and a unique adjustable headrest certainly elevate the user experience. At just 430 grams, the Susvara Unveiled is relatively lightweight compared to competitors weighing over 600 grams.

Innovative Sound Design: I Reveal Everything to You

One striking feature of the Susvara Unveiled is its open transducer design, enhancing sound transparency. Hifiman’s decision to eliminate protective grids allows for a more direct acoustic interaction, albeit with concerns regarding durability due to exposure. While the magnetic protective plate provides some protection when the headphones are not in use, users must exercise caution during operation.
