Plague: A case was detected in Karditsa 2024-08-04 23:44:46

Specifically, the sub-directorate of Veterinary P.E. Karditsa, informs all livestock farmers and citizens of the Prefecture that on 02/08/2024 the occurrence of a case of plague of small ruminants was confirmed in T.K. Stavros, of the Municipality of Karditsa.

It is a notifiable contagious viral disease that affects only sheep and goats and requires immediate emergency measures.

It is emphasized to the public that the disease does not pose a risk to public health and is not transmitted to humans, who are not infected and do not get sick.

To deal with the disease, the emergency plan for dealing with communicable diseases of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food is being implemented (Government Gazette 7121B’/18-12-2023), according to which, around the infected farm, the following are defined:

1. Protection zone, which is bounded by a circle of radius three kilometers, centered on the contaminated farm and includes the following local communities:

By Decision of the General Directorate of Veterinary Medicine, the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, from 29/07 to 11/08 all movements for fattening, reproduction, slaughter and to summer pastures of sheep and goats throughout the country as well as the cattle that come from from farms healthily linked to sheep and goat farms, either housed within the same plot, or housed on a different plot but using the same staff, common vehicles or equipment.

By Decision of the Deputy Regional Governor for Agricultural Economy, Livestock and Fisheries of the Region of Central Greece, the movement (slaughter, fattening or breeding) of all types of animals, i.e. goats, sheep, cattle and pigs, from the Region of Thessaly to the Region of Central Greece is prohibited for any reason until completion of the epidemiological investigation of the disease.

3. The movement (slaughter, fattening or reproduction) of cattle from and to the P.E. is prohibited for any reason. Karditsa, until the completion of the epidemiological and clinical investigation of the disease within the protection and surveillance zones and the determination of their extent.

The transmission of the disease occurs: by close contact between healthy and sick animals, by direct contact with the secretions of sick animals (tears, saliva, urine, feces) and indirectly through contaminated feed, bedding, machinery and media transport of animals.

To protect their herd, breeders should avoid:

1. The direct contact of their animals with other herds of unknown status.

2. To borrow and lend animals, tools and animal transport vehicles from other farms.

3. Illegal buying and selling and illegal movement of animals.

They must also regularly clean and disinfect their breeding areas and check their herd thoroughly every day for the presence of sick or suspicious animals. If they find anything of concern, they should immediately contact the relevant local veterinary authorities.

In any case, the breeders of P.E. Karditsa before any movement of their animals (cattle and pigs) should contact the Veterinary Office of the area where they are based, in order to issue the health certificate.
