August 3, 2024

Summer McIntosh wins gold in the women’s 200m individual medley (IM), her fourth medal of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

McIntosh clocked a time of 2:06.56, setting an Olympic record. The gold medal made McIntosh the first Canadian athlete to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games.

Swimming in lane five, McIntosh was second after the 50 butterfly before taking the lead in the backstroke. She slipped to second, caught by American Alex Walsh, during the 50 breaststroke but closed the gap in the freestyle to win the race. After touching the wall in third, Walsh was eventually disqualified for a violation on the backstroke turn midway through the race.

American Kate Douglass won silver and Australian Kaylee McKeown took bronze. The other Canadian in the final, Sydney Pickrem, finished sixth in 2:09.74.

It is the fourth medal at these Games for McIntosh, who also won gold in the 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley at Paris 2024, as well as a silver in the 400m freestyle.

She ties Penny Oleksiak for the most medals won by a Canadian athlete at a single Summer Olympics.
