THE government’s move through the Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) to protect the domestic refrigeration industry has received support from business people who are members of the Indonesian Refrigeration Companies Association (Perprindo).

This was conveyed during a visit by Perprindo members to the Ministry of Trade office to discuss the protection of the Indonesian Refrigeration Industry through the Safeguard Import Duty (BMTP) mechanism.

Secretary General Andy Arif Widjaja explained that Perprindo is an association of domestic industrial companies and importers who have refrigeration products (compressor products).

“Perprindo also houses 2 members with an extraordinary number, namely the AC Technician Association in Indonesia, which has approximately 10,000 MSME technicians,” said Andy in a written statement, Friday (2/8/2024).

Andy was accompanied by Deputy Secretary General Heryanto, Head of Regulation and Law Dewanti, Wildan Lazuardi and Choky, Head of Trade and Industry Henry Sofian and Head of Logistics and Distribution Tjiputra Halim. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Trade was represented by the Head of the Trade Security Committee (KPPI) Franciska Simandjuntak and staff.

Andy continued, Perprindo fully supports the government’s plan to impose BMTP if the results of the study conducted do require the imposition of safeguards for products that experience a significant spike in imports.

At the meeting, Perprindo management reiterated Perprindo’s commitment to be a discussion partner for the government, in this case the Ministry of Trade, if data is needed for a study on trade security measures.

It is hoped that through the in-depth study, if there is indeed an indication of unfair trade practices, then the government can take security measures to protect the domestic refrigeration industry.

On that occasion, Waskejen Perprindo Heryanto proposed that there be a grace period if a new policy is implemented so that investors can obtain certainty and can make good preparations in making investments in Indonesia. (Z-8)
