Public Works aims to comply with the guidelines of the National Road Plan 2030

Asuncion, IP Agency.- By implementing an ambitious plan to reduce road accident rates nationwide, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) seeks to comply with the guidelines of the Paraguay National Road Plan 2030, promoted by the Government.

In this context, the institution makes several calls directly related to this issue and the first is the National Public Tender No. 12/2024 (ID 447734) aimed at improving road safety in several sections of the national highway network including Asunción, Greater Asunción, north, south, east and center of the Eastern Region.

This project is divided into three lots covering different aspects of road safety, such as the improvement of the lateral road infrastructure of existing bridges, safety in school and hospital areas, and the implementation of horizontal signage with thermoplastic paint in key areas.

Another call made by the MOPC (ID No. 441,770) is for the management of cleaning and maintenance of the almost 3,000 km of highways, including important recreational areas such as the Ñu Guasú Park and the Guasú Metropolitan Park. In this case, there are 62 bidders in this tender.

Railings and signage

A third call is for tenders for improving road infrastructure safety in the country, ID No. 447,738, whose call is divided into 2 lots.

On the one hand, the first batch includes the improvement of lateral infrastructures, that is, the installation of 78,000 linear meters of qualified and certified railings is planned.

As part of the work on Lot 1, the removal of damaged protections and transitions between railings, among the most notable, is also established.

While Lot 2 involves everything related to horizontal signage, mainly the improvement of paints with single-component methyl methacrylate MMA and thermoplastic, including pedestrian crossings, islands, humps, directional arrows, among others.

The plan also includes the installation of speed bump lines, the removal and replacement of reflective studs and vertical signage, and the installation of vertical channeling devices. All of this is planned for 716 km of roads nationwide, and the 4 offers presented in this call for tenders are currently under evaluation.

Overpasses

The call with ID No. 449,070 is also underway, which includes maintenance and repair work on 15 overpasses (tunnels and viaducts) located on national and departmental routes, with bids expected to be received this Friday, August 2.

All these actions are part of the objectives of the Ministry of Public Works, based on the National Road Safety Plan 2030 of Paraguay.

One of the goals set is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries in road accidents by 30%, without losing sight of the global objective of a 50% reduction in the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 of the United Nations (UN).

Status of the paved road network

Currently, the MOPC has more than 10,000 km of inventoried paved sections, and execution and/or maintenance contracts for approximately 4,500 km, with the institution responsible for the maintenance by its own administration of more than 5,000 km.
