Uruguay recognizes Edmundo González as winner of Venezuelan elections

Montevideo, 2 ago (EFE).- The Government of Uruguay recognized Edmundo González as the winner of the presidential elections in Venezuela on Friday in which the National Electoral Council of that country declared the official Nicolás Maduro the winner in a widely questioned process.

“Based on overwhelming evidence, it is clear to Uruguay that Edmundo González Urrutia obtained the majority of votes in the Venezuelan presidential elections,” wrote Uruguayan Foreign Minister Omar Paganini on his social media account X.

The representative of the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry insisted that he hopes that the will of the Venezuelan people “will be respected.”

“Truth is the path to peace,” the message concludes.

Uruguay is one of the seven countries that the Government of Nicolás Maduro expelled from Venezuela after refusing to recognise the election results and calling for a vote verification process.

In this regard, the president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, said on Wednesday that if the electoral records of the elections of last Sunday, July 28 in Venezuela are not made public “it is because there is something strange” and reiterated that in the Caribbean country there is “a dictatorship.”

“If you don’t show the documents, it’s obvious that there is something strange going on. But, furthermore, we are not talking about someone who has a democratic background. I have said that Venezuela is a dictatorship and I stand by it,” the president said at a press conference.

Lacalle Pou also pointed out that what is happening is “indefensible” and said that it is incredible “how power can blind someone so much,” while emphasizing the people who left Venezuela and “are not having a good time.”
