“The Secretary affirmed the United States’ strong support for Israel’s security and informed his Israeli counterpart of additional measures, including current and future changes in the Pentagon’s defense posture, that the Pentagon will take to support Israel’s defense,” the ministry said in a statement.
Austin stressed that “further escalation is not inevitable and that all countries in the region would benefit from a de-escalation of tensions, including through the completion of the ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages.”
The US Secretary of State also stressed that “the unprecedented scope of US support for Israel since October 7 should remove any doubt from Iran, Lebanese Hezbollah, and other Iranian-backed terrorist groups about the United States’ resolve (to support Israel).”
The US Department of Defense announced that the United States will send an aircraft carrier, additional cruisers and destroyers to the Middle East to support Israeli defenses.
In addition, Secretary Austin has ordered additional destroyers and cruisers equipped with missile defense systems to the European and Central Command areas of responsibility. The Pentagon also intends to deploy additional land-based missile defense systems to the region.
These developments come amid the escalating conflict in the region between Israel on the one hand, and Iran and its allies on the other.
