American sprinter and reigning world champion Shakari Richardson won her first Olympic medal on Friday by winning silver in the women’s 100 meters at the Paris Olympics in 10.87 seconds.

Richardson was beaten by St. Lucia’s Julian Alfred, who finished in 10.72 seconds. Fellow American Melissa Jefferson finished third, earning the bronze medal with a time of 10.92.

No American woman has won the women’s 100 meters at the Olympics in nearly three decades, not since Gail Devers won in Atlanta in 1996.

Richardson, 24, received a standing ovation earlier on Friday before her semifinal heats, when she finished second and automatically qualified for the finals. Richardson ran a 10.89 but lost out in qualifying to Alfred, who ran a 10.84.

American sprinter Tewanisha Terry also qualified for Friday’s final, finishing fifth in 10.97.

Richardson did not play two-time Olympic champion and eight-time Olympic medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica after she shockingly withdrew from the event shortly before her semi-final heats. No reason was immediately given for the withdrawal. The 37-year-old announced earlier that this would be her last Olympic appearance.

Earlier on Friday, Richardson and Fraser-Price Temporarily refused entry They headed to the Stade de France’s warm-up area before the semifinals because they reportedly arrived at the venue in private cars instead of team shuttles, violating changes to overnight rules that require athletes who do not stop in the Olympic Village to enter the venue to warm up. The runway passes through a separate entrance.
